This is the last part of the series on axe maintenance and repair. Here I cover the basics of making a quick, improvised handle in the woods. With sufficient time you can make a handle of much greater quality, but as you can see here, one can be made in about ten minutes.

Keep in mind that green/wet wood will be much easier to carve than dry wood.
The best handles are made from dry hard wood such as hickory. Red oak or ash also make good handles. You will have to compromise between ease of carving and durability of the handle.
